Training Benefits

After attendance at this training, attendees will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a good understanding of the basic hazards associated with electricity near flammable gases and vapours

  • Install safe working systems in hazardous locations

  • Understand the Classification of hazardous locations

  • Detail the types of equipment that can be used in a given hazardous location

  • Explain the types of equipment and protection concepts that can be used in Hazardous locations

  • Understand safety and operational aspects of hazardous locations

  • Understand system limitations in using hazardous locations protection

Person who completed the advanced course are declared as A Competent Person who is able to express an opinion on the safety of explosion protected equipment and are also competent to conduct Visual & Close inspections in Hazardous Locations as per OHS Act 85 of 1993, Electrical Machine Regulation 9.8. as per South African legislation.

The Training

This theoretical & practical training gives a solid foundation in the principles of explosion protection with reference to the local national and international standards for the installation and maintenance of this equipment. The training presented was developed on the Unit Standard No. 13821 - Test and inspect an electrical installation in a hazardous location.(SAQA)

This training course gives the delegate training regarding the principles of explosion protection with reference to national and international standards:

  • SANS 10108;

  • SANS IEC 60079:0; SANS IEC 60079:10-1; SANS IEC 60079:10-2; SANS IEC 60079:14; SANS 60079:17

  • SANS 10086; SANS 10089;

The principles of Hazardous Locations do not change since these are based on the laws of physics. However, the interpretation of these standards causes differences in their applications. This is clearly outlined in the training.

Artisans working with hazardous location process control, electrical, instrumentation equipment require an understanding of the close integration between the safety and operational concepts of hazardous locations as a protection technique in order to specify and maintain systems.

Who should Attend

Those involved in specification, installation, commissioning, maintenance and/or documentation of Instrumentation, control, electrical and mechanical systems.

This includes:

  • Trades-persons working in potentially explosive locations

  • Electrical, instrument / control, process and mechanical trades-persons

  • Supervisors / Technicians

  • Engineers / Responsible Persons / Legal Appointed Person

Comprehensive Manual

A comprehensive manual comprising useful material/drawings and tables will be supplied. This will form a useful reference manual and assist learners in their work / duties within hazardous locations.

Theoretical and Practical Sessions

During the duration of the training a presentation, video clips & case studies of actual explosions / incidents that occurred will be presented.

On successful completion of both assessments (practical/theoretical) a Certificate of Competency will be issued to successful delegates.
